The Hayling Helpers are a group of over 250 volunteers who have banded together to help all of us on Hayling Island who are coping with the response to COVID-19.
We recognise that some may struggle with this at times and some may struggle throughout.
We also know that many of us have the resources and drive to help our neighbours who are struggling and that is what this group is about.
If you are struggling to get food, access medications or are struggling with wellbeing, then this group will try to help you.
This is a group of volunteers to ask help from whilst you are self isolating because of COVID-19.
If you need shopping, gas or electric top up, medication or prescription collection, please ask for help. Don’t suffer alone as Hayling Helpers will be here to support you as we come together during this time of need.
Wendy Ball Hayling Islander and founder of Hayling Helpers.
I set up this voluntary group in mid March, the aim was to help the most vulnerable and the self isolators during the Covid 19 outbreak.
Within days hundreds of local volunteers offered to help which grew everyday. It became apparent very early on that I needed to create a small consultative group that would include local knowledge and expertise.
It was then that Hayling Helpers became what we are today.
It is very worrying times for our community and we will do our best to help in these uncertain times.
I would like to personally thank each of the consultative group member and every volunteer/helper and to everyone who has donated food/money to this fast moving support group.
Stay safe and well and please stay home to save yourself and our NHS.
How to access help
All roads on Hayling now have a coordinator. These amazing people have volunteered to be the focal point of support for your road.
You should have had a leaflet through your letterbox with your coordinator's contact details, but if you haven't got their details to hand, contact our office on 02392 467545 and we will be able to point you in the right direction.
Hayling Helpers have a hub base at Hayling Island Community Centre. Volunteers are manning our advice and support phone lines, and can help with prescription and other queries.
Another service from the hub is our shop (in T @ the Park cafe)...open strictly for vulnerable or isolated people, Hayling Helpers and all wonderful NHS workers.
The hub is open Monday-Saturday from 9am until 4pm and you can either call them direct to order a delivery to your house or speak to your street coordinator to find out how you can access the shop.
It's important to remember that you need to stay well for all sorts of reasons as well as carrying out all of the extra precautions necessary to reduce your risk of being infected by COVID-19.
If you rely on repeat prescriptions to help manage your ongoing illness and have them prescribed by one of our local GPs, then our team of volunteers can arrange for your prescriptions to be picked up by our local pharmacist and delivered to your door.
Social isolation is going to be a major problem for many of us in the coming months. We are all social animals and are generally healthier when we can listen to others and connect. This will become a major issue for many of us on the island and to help overcome this you may want to take part in this local initiative called Chatterbox.
By using the service, you will be able to make connections with one of our volunteers on the island and talk to each other on the phone about ... well anything and nothing.
